The Risks and Gains of Downgrading Any PSP Firmware
Many PSP owners are now resorting to downgrading the firmware of their units to enjoy many features without the built-in restrictions placed in by Sony.
In order to play "homebrew" games stored in your memory cards, PSP owners needs to downgrade their units to 1.5; while those using 3.01 to 3.50 might need to wait awhile before some hacker can figure out how to downgrade it.
Homebrew games are those games originally made for the Playstation console. These games are converted to fit the control functions of PSP. Other games use emulators so that it can function in your unit such as SuperNes or Nintendo games.
Another feature of downgrading comes with the installation of software that will enable you to add functionality into your PSP. Such software includes upgrades for browsers like Flash and Shockwave players, which allows you to open YouTube and other streaming sites on the Net.
PSP Firmware versions
There are 14 known version of PSP firmware today namely 1.5, 1.51, 1.52, 2.0, 2.01, 2.5, 2.6, 2.6, 2.71, 2.8, 3.0, 3.01, 3.02, 3.03, and 3.50. While the version 1.5 requires no downgrading since the built-in restrictions doesn't exist with it; later versions, however, have different steps for downgrading, and they are:
1.51/1.52. These version needs to be upgraded to 2.0 before it can be downgraded back to 1.5
2.01/2.5/2.6/2.7. Upgrade to 2.71 and downgrade back to 1.5 (you might need to download the 2.71 downgrader from sites on the Internet)
2.8 to 3.03. These versions have their own respective downgrader which can be downloaded from sites online.
3.50. Currently no downgrading software available.
Note, however, that not all versions can be directly downgraded to 1.5. Some of them, like 1.51 and 1.52, need to be upgraded to a later version before it can be downgraded back to 1.5.
Risks of downgrading any PSP
Despite the overwhelming advantages of downgrading PSP to the no-restriction 1.5, there is a great risk in turning your device to nothing.
First off, a firmware is a combination of both hardware and software in your PSP. The chip contains the software that holds all the instructions for the PSP hardware to function; if the downgrading process fails, and then your PSP's functionality might be compromised (otherwise termed as "brick").
Let the downgrading begins
The most important step in downgrading your PSP is to determine its exact firmware version. Since each are quite unique, especially in process for downgrading, you have to make sure that you do it right the first time.
You need the following in order to proceed with the downgrading process:
Your PSP and its USB cable to connect it to the PC
An Internet connection so that you can download the needed files and instructions for downgrading
And the AC adaptor so that your unit has a ready power supply so that it won't turn off in the middle of the downgrading process.
Once you have all the requirements are met, the only thing left to do is the downgrading process to be initiated. Make sure you read carefully the instructions that came with the files you downloaded, since one false move could "brick" your PSP (which is quite expensive to "unbrick" - a hundred dollars worth).
